Former Thomasville High School Students, Did the Graduation Test Prevent You From Receiving a Diploma?
House Bill 91 was signed into law March 2015 by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. This law states that students shall no longer be required to earn a passing score on any graduation test to earn a high school diploma. This means that any former student of a Georgia Public School who failed to graduate solely due to the Graduation Test, may petition their former school to receive a diploma. The law includes all subjects, forms and versions of the Georgia High School Graduation Test, Georgia High School Writing Test and the Basic Skills Test which was administered to students who enrolled for the first time in Grade 9 on or after July 1, 1981. There is no deadline to submit a petition for graduation. Once a petition is submitted, the former students’ records will be reviewed to determine if all other graduation requirements are met. Qualified petitioners’ names will be submitted to the superintendent’s office to be placed on the next board meeting agenda for approval, which will determine the date of graduation. Former students who meet requirements will be eligible to receive one free transcript to be picked up or mailed to an employer, armed service branch or college. The former student will be responsible for the cost of a diploma and any additional transcripts requested. If desired, the graduate will receive a diploma in a ceremony at the regular board meeting in June or December.
